Rowing machines: Three different systems dominate

Ergometers with water resistance come closest to real rowing. In some models, a paddle is pulled through a water drum, in others, the rowing hoist lifts a specified amount of water.

It is more important than the type of resistance, however, that it can be individually adjusted – ideally continuously.
